Tamayo (Open) House
Imagine you are a foster youth aging out of the system finding that basic resources you had counted on - food, shelter, and health care - are automatically discontinued and you are left in a major transition time in life, unprepared, with limited people in your life to support you….
Imagine you are a youth who has found yourself homeless with no job, no phone, no one around to support and guide you….
Imagine that you are a youth is being told for the first time in life that you have a mental illness that is incurable and will need to be treated for the rest of your life….
Most everyone can remember the struggles of making the transition from adolescence to adulthood - the fear of applying for their first job - the confusion following a first break up - learning how to cook spaghetti. Not many persons think about what life would have been like without their supporters. What happens if you don’t have someone to call for guidance? What happens if you are trying to manage an illness and learn to be an adult?
Tamayo House is a transitional housing opportunity for these youth which offers a safe place to live, counseling, case management, job readiness training, adult mentoring, and independent living skills instruction. The goal is for each resident to have privacy and independence, yet be able to access support when they feel they need it. This is achieved through providing private rooms, but sharing kitchen/dining, recreation, and computer lab areas. Peer facility monitors provide security and stability and, together with all the Tamayo House residents, everyone helps each other to become independent, community-involved adults.
Services are available in English and Spanish.
